PLANETROMEO Top 3
There’s a lot of fabulous queer content coming to this year’s And What? festival so we’ve highlighted these performances as out top three must see events.
Medea, Written in Rage
Acclaimed theatre director Neil Bartlett brings his insight and magic to the ancient tale of Medea. Working with Jean René Lemoine’s text originally composed in French, this piece reimagines what Medea would have said if no one judged her. Medea is brought to life by François Testory who transcends gender to convey the empathy of a woman scorned, a child killer and the ultimate outsider. Medea, Written in Rage is a must see.
B*ttmunch / Naked Boys Reading
Naked Boys Reading (NBR) is the perfect intimate live event: a literary salon featuring in-the-buff readings by local beefcakes, bears, twinks, otters, butch femmes, sissy sluts, boys next door with an exhibitionist streak and lovers of naturism with a well-endowed library.
Bruce LaBruce: The Haus of Bruce LaBruce
Canadian underground adult film director, photographer, writer and queer provocateur, Bruce LaBruce (Hustler White, The Raspberry Reich, Otto; or, Up With Dead People, L.A. Zombie) brings an exhibition of his work to London. Technically its after the And What? Queer Arts Festival, so its being billed as an aftershock, The Haus of Bruce LaBruce.
The And What? programme is almost entirely made up of world premieres and/or London firsts, including brand new: theatre, music, live art, club nights, contemporary drag, youth engagement projects , exhibitions, circus, cabaret and some really out-there ‘experiences’
Things will be happening all over London, in traditional spaces like theatres and galleries; Queer spaces, like clubs and back rooms; public spaces such as cinemas and more unusual corners, nooks and crannies, from churches and swimming pools to tattoo studios.
And What? welcomes some of the most exciting UK based queer voices around like Alexander Geist, Steakhouse Live, Rosie Wilby, Nando Messias and Darren Pritchard/Cornel Simons. Alongside established artists such as Neil Bartlett, and internationally recognised performers and makers like Peaches Christ/Jinkx Monsoon (doing their Houcum Pokem parody of Disney’s Hocus Pocus), Bruce LaBruce (first UK exhibition) and Himherandit (youth engagement programme). From Drag Race to super NOW.
